Tips for better results

Use this only for files you are allowed to open. It cannot guess a forgotten password. The unlocked copy is rebuilt from page pictures, so text may not be selectable; use OCR PDF if needed.

Good to know before you start

Two kinds of protection exist in PDFs: an open password that is required to view the file, and permissions that restrict printing or copying. This tool asks for the open password when it is needed and then creates a copy that has neither. It does not break passwords or bypass protection that you cannot satisfy, so a forgotten password remains a problem. Use it for documents that belong to you, for example a bank statement protected with your customer number, when you want to store or merge them without typing the password each time. The unlocked copy is rebuilt from pictures of the pages, so run OCR if you need selectable text.

Why use PDFToolkit
