Why Browser-Based PDF Tools Are Safer

Most online PDF sites work the same way: you upload your file, a server processes it, and you download the result. That means a copy of your lease, W-9, medical form or ID scan travels across the internet and sits on a machine you do not control, for as long as the company decides to keep it. Browser-based PDF tools turn this around. The tool comes to your file instead of your file going to the tool.

How a browser-based PDF tool works

When you choose a file, your browser reads it into memory and runs the processing code on your own phone or computer. The result is created locally and handed to you as a download. PDFToolkit has no server that receives your documents, so there is nothing for us to store, read, sell or lose in a data breach.

What this protects you from

What it does not protect you from

Be realistic about the limits. A browser-based tool cannot protect a file that is already on a compromised device, and it cannot hide what you do on your own screen. Browser extensions you installed can see web pages, so use a clean browser profile for very sensitive documents. Public computers should be avoided for anything confidential, and you should close the tab when you finish so the file leaves memory.

Good habits for sensitive PDFs

How to check the claim yourself

You do not have to take our word for it. Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, run a tool, and watch: you will see the page and the tool libraries load, but your file is never sent anywhere. You can even switch off your internet connection after the page has loaded and most tools keep working.
