What is Redact PDF?

Covering text with a black box in an editor can leave the words underneath. This tool finds the words you list and blacks them out, then rebuilds every page as a picture so the hidden text is really gone from the file.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Upload the PDF.
  2. Type the words or numbers to black out, separated by commas.
  3. Press Start. Matches are found and covered on each page.
  4. Download the redacted file; the note tells you how many areas were hidden.

Tips for better results

Search finds text in text-based PDFs only; for scans, run OCR PDF first or redact by another method. Always review the output page by page. Because pages become pictures, text in the result is not selectable.

Good to know before you start

True redaction means the hidden information no longer exists in the file. Many quick methods only draw a black rectangle on top of text, leaving the words available to anyone who copies or searches the document. This tool finds your terms, draws black boxes at their positions and then saves every page as a picture, so the covered text cannot be recovered. Search is case-insensitive and matches parts of words, so use full names or complete numbers to avoid over-redacting. After downloading, open the result and scan each page, because a term that is split across lines or spelled differently may be missed. Share only the redacted copy.
